A Sam Two Bulls painting on a flyer for Oglala Lakota College captivated my attention. I loved his colors, the haunting quality of the Indian couple, the wind, and even the dead tree. I added some tipis and my own colors and interpretation.

Two young Indian girls are sitting on a log surrounded by many animals: a deer, horses, buffalo, elk, bear, fox, raccoon, bunnies, squirrel and a raven. This painting was created to illustrate the Lakota message: mitakuye oyasin -- we are all related. It is one of the illustrations in Candace's children's picture book of the same name.

I received a photograph of my six-year old granddaughter kissing a big bay horse. It was an adorable picture, and I got the idea of changing her into an young Indian girl and making it into a painting. I also changed the bay horse from the original photograph into a paint horse—my favorite kind.

I decided to do a series of combined tipi and horse paintings. These are two subjects that are quite popular. Horses were often tied outside a lodge as a gift to honor, to celebrate, or to win a maiden's heart and guarantee she would become your wife.

The second in my tipi/pony series. These handsome ponies are posing in front of two decorated lodges. Lodges were painted by men to show the exploits, accomplishments, or medicine of the male inhabitant. Tipis or lodges were traditionally made, owned, and set up or taken down by the women in Northern Plains Indian Tribes.

Since most of the Indian people in my paintings are quite small, I wanted to experiment with doing a quite large close-up. I also went outside my box somewhat to try doing some facial features on this Indian man. His love, his woman wanted to be more featureless, while still possessing strength and beauty.

Inspired by being asked to participate in “A Tribute to the Great American Cowboy” Western Art Show, I decided to try painting some cowgirls. I used photographs of one of my granddaughters on her horse for my model, adding cowgirl hats, boots, western clothing, etc. Cowgirls Rose and Star, sitting on their painted ponies, wear clothing decorated with roses and stars. They are ready to ride.
